Clear & Simple Chord Style Piano

Chord style piano is a powerful method for learning to play your favorite songs. If you're completely new to the piano, chord style piano is a simple way to get started. If you're a skilled note reader, chord style piano can expand your knowledge of music theory and help you look at music in a whole new way. Pop artists, jazz musicians and many other professionals use chord style piano as their only technique or to augment their classical training.

The Clear & Simple Chord Style Piano series contains 3 books and a total of 149 songs. Each book costs $14.95 plus shipping and handling.

BOOK 1 features 50 songs. To assist the complete beginner, note letters have been provided for every note, and exact fingerings have been provided for every hand movement. The songs are presented in a progressive order.

What's Next?

Once you've learned the songs in all three "Clear & Simple Chord Style Piano" books, you've got an excellent working knowledge of chords and melodies in a variety of keys and are ready for the next step - playing from a fake book! A fake book is just a book of music arrangements featuring the melody line and chords, but no bass clef notes. It's your job to make up your own accompaniment based on the chord symbols provided.

Here are some reasons to use a fake book as opposed to fully arranged music:
  1. You can fit a lot more songs in a lot less space. Some fake books have as many as 1200 songs! This would never work if each song were fully arranged, with both treble and bass clefs. It also means you'll have fewer page turns while playing.
  2. You can play the same song a little differently each time, if that's what you want to do. This allows you to exercise some creativity when you are playing as opposed to simply following exact instructions, and it gives your listeners the variety they crave.
  3. You can make the left-hand accompaniment as simple or as complicated as you want. This means you can adapt to any situation. If you're at home by yourself you can experiment with flights of fancy. If you're feeling nervous in front of an audience you can dial down the complexity, and if you're feeling great in front of an audience you can pull out all the stops and give them a show they'll never forget. All this from a single arrangement!
You can play in this style from ANY book or sheet music arrangement that has chord symbols (most music published in recent decades includes chord symbols), but here are a few suggestions to help you get started:

About Me

Hi! My name is Gerry Baird, and I've been playing chord style piano for more than a decade. I also play classical piano, and I find that the combination of the two styles gives me a wide range of options as a performer and arranger. If you'd like to hear my music - and a sample of what's possible with chord style piano - visit my Bandcamp web site.

I've been teaching piano lessons since 2007, and I've seen the different ways that people approach the piano depending on their age, interests and personality. I am convinced that anyone can learn to play the piano, but so many people quit because they're only presented with one way to learn. Since that way doesn't work for them, they decide to give up on the piano altogether. That's kind of like dismissing every religion because you went to one church one time and didn't like it. Not every religion is the same, and not all piano methods are created equal. If you had a bad experience in the past but have always wanted to play, I encourage you to take a look at the books on this site. Before long you just might find yourself making music!
